Electric and Water Recomendations

Hello Kachess Community Members:

How many 100 year rains/floods can we have in a decade? It appears that the drain and culvert work that was performed last year worked well. We have had no complaints or reports of problems. Admittedly, not many of us have ventured up to the lake yet. We do know that Via Kachess if fully passable and that we lost about two feet of snow pack.

We just heard from one of our newer community members, Paul Aigner. He went up to the lake this evening and found that the power was out. He called PSE to report it and they stated that it had been out since Tuesday. They expect the power to be restored by Saturday afternoon.

I then called Gene Price who lives up at the lake. They lost power Monday night and it was just restored tonight. I know that there are at least two feeds into our community so it is possible that some had power for some or most all of this week and some, like Gene and Paul had no power.

I hope that when you leave your cabin/home each time that you turn off your water at a valve just inside or outside your home. This is something that should be done year round but should be a habit in the winter. You never know when a wash machine hose or other connection could burst. It seems like every year or so we have a major loss of water usually due to a cracked water pipe inside a residence that froze. One of our members had 20,000 gallons each day pour into their place last month until volunteers found it. Think about that! At our place, we have a little 90 degree valve right on the main as it enters our basement. It’s easy to get to and literally takes us 2 seconds to operate. If you don’t have an easy access main valve, a plumber could install one in an hour plus his travel. I digress….. sorry … kind of.

Here’s why I’m writing to you tonight: If your heat source requires electricity to operate it hasn’t been heated since Tuesday, my guess is that, like Paul’s place, it’s at or below 40 degrees. His is nicely insulated. The older ones are not. It’s 28 degrees there now. The low is predicted to be in the mid 20’s. Is that enough to freeze your pipes? Perhaps not. Is that something you want to gamble with? That’s up to you but please know that our weakened water system suffers greatly when we have a leak and it costs us all money.

We strongly recommend that if you left your water on and if your only source of heat requires electricity, then that you make a trip to the lake and shut off your water. Who knows? If PSE experiences an unpredictable fault while they brings us all back on line, it could delay electricity for anywhere from an hour to a day or more. We are lucky (in a sense) that it’s not 15 or 20 degrees up there right now.

If you have any additional information please pass it on to Marisa (kca.sec.tres@comcast.net) or me (president@kachess.com).

Thanks to all who attended the New Years Eve beach party and a huge THANK YOU to all who sponsored it again this year. It is neighbors like you that make Kachess sure a wonderful community.

Here’s to the balance of our Kachess winter filled with 25 degree snowy days!

Kachess Board President
